Chapel of St. Basil

At the entrance of the Goreme Open Air Museum the nave and narthex are divided with 2 arches. The grave niche in the narthex and the graves on the floor are thought to be for the donor and the relatives of the donor. The nave is cradle vaulted to its full width, rectangular planned and with 3 apses. They are situated on the left long wall of the nave and one of them is larger than the others. The identity of the grave in the niche in the nave is not known. The three Maltese Crosses on the vault represent God, the son Jesus and the holy spirit.

The church has two styles of painting technique like in the nunnery. Along with the geometrical designs painted directly on the rock, the secco tecnique is used. The St.Basil church is dated to 11th century.

Scenes: On the main apse is aportrait of Jesus, and next to this is aportrait of Mary and Baby Jesus. On the north wal1 is picture of St. Theodore, whiLe St. George and the dragon are featured on the south wall. The paintings of St Demetrius and two famale saints can also be seen.
